Results of the EU4Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Armenian Communities Project Summarised

On March 26, a formal event marked the conclusion of the EU4Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Armenian Communities Project. The Project, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), was launched in 2023. 

With a total budget of €2.8 million, the Project has improved access to energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities for many communities and households in the Lori, Tavush, Shirak, Gegharkunik, and Syunik regions. These efforts have contributed to enhancing energy security for the rural population and conservation of natural resources. 

As part of the Project, renewable energy and energy efficiency measures have been implemented in 105 community and state buildings through a cost-sharing approach by beneficiary organisations: 

• Solar power plants with capacities ranging from 3 kW to 150 kW have been installed in 101 buildings, including kindergartens, community centers, cultural houses, medical institutions, and other facilities. More than 20 of these buildings have received large-scale solar power stations (15-60 kW). The medical centers of Sevan, Ijevan, Gavar, and Martuni towns have been equipped with 150 kW solar power plants. 

• Many buildings have been equipped with solar water heaters. Energy efficiency improvements have been implemented, including thermal insulation of roofs and basements and installation of energy-efficient doors and windows. 

Additionally, 688 households have received energy-efficient stoves—provided free of charge to vulnerable families and on a cost-sharing basis for others. 

The project's initiatives have led to a reduction of over 2,600 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, which will result in saving more than 1,350 m³ of firewood per year and conservation of over 10.5 hectares of forest. 

Further activities have included training for metalworkers on technical and business aspects of energy-efficient stoves, educational measures for community representatives on sustainable energy, energy conservation, and environmental protection, as well as the operation and maintenance of installed solar power plants, and awareness raising campaigns in multiple communities, including meetings with local officials, outreach events, and expo exhibitions on renewable energy and energy efficiency. 

Welcome speeches were delivered by the Head of Local Self-Governance Policy Department of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Ashot Giloyan, Cooperation Officer for Transport, Energy, Environment & Climate at the EU Delegation to Armenia and GIZ Armenia Portfolio Manager Letizia Carnevali.
